A private tour with New Orleans Tour Hub is always a completely custom itinerary, created just for you and your group! A private Plantations Tour can be from 4 hours – 10 hours, depending on the destination. Pick-up and Drop-off locations are the group’s choice. While many visitors to New Orleans have specific sites they would like to see, many are happy to let our team create a custom itinerary that fits their interests, budget, mobility, and timeline. No two groups are alike and we will plan a trip tailored to your group’s interests, budget, and needs.
New Orleans is a city known for its diversity, culture, character, and food. However, many people never venture outside of the bustling city. On this Plantations Tour, you’ll experience some of the historic plantations that surround the Crescent City. These Antebellum estates have a history all their own – of cotton and sugarcane, of Creole and European immigration, and of slavery and the early African American experience. Discover the legacy that remains from these unique facets of Plantation life.
On a Half-Day Tour, experience the plantation of your choice with a dedicated local guide, and an opportunity to get a more in-depth perspective and a complete story about this chapter of Louisiana history. You’ll also get the option of adding a stop at a local Cajun or Creole restaurant using time-honored recipes, featuring traditional and seasonal food from the region.
On a Full-Day tour, you’ll have time to visit an additional nearby plantation, complete with all the stories and history that it entails.
There are many plantations located within Southern Louisiana, and each will have varying availability and hours of operation. Here you will find some of the most popular options:
Oak Alley Plantation:
This oak-lined plantation has been a sugar plantation, a cattle ranch, and is currently a non-profit dedicated to preserving and respecting the beauty of its landscape and the history of slavery on the property.
Used as a filming location for the movies Interview with the Vampire and 12 Years a Slave, this property has been home to indigo farms, a sugar plantation, and an oil refinery. Here, you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the history and lives of the free and enslaved residents. Destrehan also offers period craft demonstrations on most days.
Originally started by German immigrants before the American Revolution, this 2,000 acre estate is now an engaging museum dedicated to slavery in the Southern United States. It has also served as a filming location for the 2012 film, Django Unchained.
St. Joseph Plantation:
This plantation offers the unique feature of still being family-owned and operated. A smaller property than some of its neighbors, this estate offers a intimate look at a sugar plantation on a different scale.
Originally a working Creole plantation, and later serving as an infirmary during the Civil War, this plantation is one of the most well-preserved properties in Louisiana. The original manor home, several outbuildings, and two slave cabins are still standing.
